My Review: The book is interspersed with chapters from the view of the killer, and the perspective from the law rushing against the clock to find him. Even though the reader is sometimes one step ahead having the killer's method in mind, there is twist after twist. Predictably, there is a new policeman in town but that's where any certainty ends. It's impossible not to fall for the beautiful and broken DI Callanach with his back-story woven into the story in small segments like a jigsaw puzzle.
The gore of the action is sometimes too gruesome. And there were a couple of times I gasped aloud and turns in the plot. When the finale presented itself, it could have gone a number of ways and I was not able to put the book down until I had finished it. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

My Review: The book starts brilliantly. The concept is great – as I tucked in to the first chapter I was delighted that the story lives up to the novel idea. It's a beautiful story that flicks between current day and Pat's teenage years in the sixties. As Pat's story becomes clear it's clear to see how she became the grand Patrice Leigh, and her role in supporting people who seek out a medium. Much my reading was spent thinking is she or isn't she (the real thing)?. Interwoven with Leo and Louise's lives respectively, the pain of grief and losing a loved one is heartfelt. When the loose ends came together at the end, I wanted to reread the book again straight away.
VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Thank you so much the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary electronic copy in return for an honest review.
My Review: Emma is a delicate soul who spends her adult years trying to make sense of a tragedy that happened when she was thirteen years old. When she gets the opportunity to get closure on what happened at Camp Nightingale she takes it. At this point I'm shouting at her to not go back. Of course things go wrong immediately, and Emma has to confront the repercussions of the lies she told.
The tension and the plot are riveting and the story is beautifully told. There are so many lies and assumptions, it's difficult to guess who did 'it' then and now. It was a complete surprise at the end as the story unfolded. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Thank you so much the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary electronic copy in return for an honest review. 26/6/2018 0 Comments Review: The Dead Ex
My Review: I was really looking forward to reading The Dead Ex (I'm a huge fan of Jane Corry and would recommend taking a look at her back catalogue - My Husband's Wife and Blood Sisters.)
My Dead Ex is told from the different perspectives of women and their life with David (the Dead Ex) and the stories are interwoven beautifully. Scarlet - a young girl put in various care homes when her mother is sent to prison. Vicki - an aromatherapist, David's first wife. Tanya - David’s once PA and second wife. Helen - an ambitious intern working for David’s company The book is a who-dunnit, how-dunnit, and why-dunnit, the suspense and twists kept me riveted. As with her other books by Jane Corry it isn’t always clear the connection of the various narrators, but that’s also part of the pleasure of reading and wondering how they will meet later on. With the detailed description of children placed in care and prison governance are heart-breaking. Just when you think the story is resolved there is one final screw. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Thank you so much the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary electronic copy in return for an honest review. 14/6/2018 0 Comments Review: Anatomy of a Scandal
My Review:An absolutely excellent read. The novel is less did-he-do-it and more about the judicial system that is in place (not at all boring or procedural), and the challenges a he said/she said legal process presents; how is a jury ever to know what to believe?
The story is told (mainly) from two perspectives the (was she long-suffering?) wife, and the prosecuting barrister with her own agenda. These two sides offer two strong and individual female stance on sexual assault. Just as I thought it was over, the last few chapters threw more curve balls. An enjoyable and riveting read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. 2018 is certainly shaping to be the year for exceptional debut writing! |
